Tiffany Dang

As a young Asian-American, there is substantial pressure to be the ideal and obedient female in western culture. I choose to defy this role by freely expressing myself and exploring my sexuality through my work. Portraiture and the figure are jumping off points, and explore subjects such as vulnerability, ambiguity, and perceptions of the feminine and masculine. I capture intimate moments in my day-to-day life through a camera lens and use that as inspiration for video and paintings. Much of the meaning in my work lies in the intention and processes I use when creating it, which are dependent on my own state of mind. The moments depicted vary between the intense and confrontational to the vulnerable. The work is inherently sexual and provocative, sometimes in more apparent ways and at other times vague and ephemeral. Ultimately, the paintings and videos explore the inherent power of displaying one’s own form and is an exercise in autonomy.
