I make figurative oil paintings that are grounded in realism, but bring in a subtle distortion of proportions and perspective. In the works, I introduce the female figure isolated in her own personal space. The figure looks out at the viewer, aware that it is being seen, giving the figure a sense of self-awareness. I find inspiration from moments or places where I feel the most comfortable and safe in my everyday life and allow the viewer to become a part of that space. Highlighting the mundane moments that we spend alone with ourselves that often get overlooked, but are actually very important to better understanding yourself and escape the overwhelming outside world. My process has included building source imagery from taking many photographs of myself or people I know, breaking down each part by, distorting, enlarging, and breaking the perspective, then reconstructing the different pieces back together into a new image. I desire to bring a strangeness and an awkwardness to the pieces through the abnormally large hands and feet, walking the line between realism and fantasy. The works include a narrative built through the details throughout, although the works appear to depict a simple moment.
