Andrew Larochelle

Sparked by my interest in the surrealist practice of automatism, my work acts as a form of therapy for me to explore what comes to fruition by the immediacy and indiscriminate application of the ink and brush. The concept of pareidolia informs my work as well; it is the tendency to perceive or impose meaningful objects or patterns in seemingly random objects and patterns, like seeing an image in the clouds.

I make a point to highlight ink as the medium of choice, as it relates to traditional uses of documentation within writing and imagery throughout history. The crammed markings mimic glyphs, acting as a form of indecipherable language that plays into the tendency for imposed perception by the viewer.
