Alexa Funahashi

Through the creation of art pieces that possess an uncanny appearance, I encourage my viewers to conceive their own narratives about the artwork. My work is inspired by props made for films, shows, and plays. I am interested in the unexpected and creating works that are highly illusionary and dabble between the realms of science fiction  and fantasy. I’ve always liked to imagine new worlds I could escape to when the real world became too much; I want to be able to do the same for others. Growing up, I could imagine a new environment polarizing  from my own. My previous works are 3D pieces of fantasy such as: octopus creatures escaping from bowls of ramen. A different piece of work involved a boulder covered in mushrooms that revealed a concealed cave inhabited by fairies. I take my imagined world and make it accessible to others. By sculpting works of art that look otherworldly, I invite my audience to create their own stories about the work, just as I have imagined my own.
