Tilman Stoppler

My art is profoundly shaped by my personal experiences, including my anxiety. I am committed to translating these experiences into compelling wooden sculptures using bold lines, sometimes vibrant colors, and meticulously structured patterns. Making each piece a reflection of both my inner world and outer experiences. Looking at how the repetition and smooth lines coming together, one piece at a time, is intended to have a soothing and calming effect.

I create layers of patterned shapes with each sculpture to allow for layered revelation and depth, enabling viewers to understand the intricate geometric patterns assembled. I am constantly mindful of how these layers are perceived, always exploring how colors and elements evolve.

Starting with blocks of wood and sketches, I carefully cut them to size based on my vision. My concept is then ground away, eliminating unnecessary material, to reveal the underlying pattern. Especially paying close attention to the thickness and weight of each component. I then burn or stain the wood to highlight the grain, symbolizing my journey to growth through a connection to my sculptures. As I decide on the layers of paint and additional details, I prioritize creating lines and dimensions that are almost equal, parallel, and symmetrical, elements that cultivate anxious harmony.
