Siena Wigert

Drawing inspiration from medieval manuscript art and late 20th century fashion, I create oil paintings that bring out the humor and awkwardness of social interactions while also recognizing the earnestness of each situation. Using memories from parties, nightlife, and gatherings as the point of departure for each piece, I experiment with vibrant color palettes to create atmospheres that are flat and illustrative. By using a visual language that combines both pre-modern and contemporary aesthetics, I create worlds that challenge the viewer to find humor in dramatic situations. I draw from 1970’s fashion catalogs and vintage clothing patterns as inspiration for the wardrobes of each person. I create visual rhymes by repeating hair styles, clothing and facial expressions, infusing the paintings with a feeling of the uncanny underneath a sense of repetitious monotony.
