Areli Enriquez

The entirety of my practice is a tedious, painstaking process of repetition, consisting of recreating highly detailed and rendered textures, manipulating paint onto the canvas, sculpting, layering, and carving it to create these three-dimensional surfaces. I draw inspiration from my everyday interactions with different surfaces, selecting from those I become extremely fixated on, cataloging their meniscal details, and creating compositions inspired from it.

This meticulous repetition entails hyper-fixated focus that it becomes an intimate moment with the piece. It is a mediative process, providing a sense of control and release, feeding my perfectionistic tendencies as I become engrossed into the technique for hours at a time. It is then when I feel the most in control of my handling of the paint, falling into a trance with paying attention solely to the canvas, and not remembering myself as who I was separate from the process of creating these textures
