Fernanda Dávila

With each frantic drawing, painting, and sculpture I create, I enter a more complex understanding of the human mind. Working with collections of hand-me-down objects allows me to highlight the distasteful, yet familiar aspects of life. My surreal compositions and color choices are guided by the fragmented chaos of childhood memories, fears, and dreams. I’m curious about the evolution of intersectionality and social acceptance. I use my practice as a way to unravel cultural influence during upbringing and challenge the traditional roles that follow. Taking elements of those shared experiences, I embed psychological symbolism in my work to unsettle the audience, yet validate their discomfort. These explorations encourage a viewer to untangle their relationship with their own subconscious, creating flashes of insight into their own minds, and moments of vertigo as they lose their understanding of their relationship to their own identity.
